Photo Gallery 14 - Band of Horses

05.21.16 - I got close enough to this small band of Salt River wild horses to watch the lead mare and herd stallion fulfill their duties. Folks often think that the herd stallion is in charge, but it's the lead mare who typically controls the daily routine including movement, finding food and water, and general well being of the other horses. The herd stallion stays on the periphery, usually at the rear, to fight off predators, drive straggling herd members forward, and keep the herd together.
